Adaptive Clock with Useful Jitter

چکیده
The growing variability in nanoelectronic devices due to uncertainties from the manufacturing process and environmental conditions (power supply, temperature, aging) requires increasing design guardbands, forcing circuits to work with conservative clock frequencies. Various schemes for clock generation based on ring oscillators have been proposed with the goal to mitigate the power and performance losses attributable to variability. However, there has been no systematic analysis to quantify the benefits of such schemes. This paper presents and analyzes an Adaptive Clocking scheme with Useful Jitter (ACUJ) that uses variability as an opportunity to reduce power by adapting the clock frequency to the varying environmental conditions and, thus, reducing guardband margins significantly. Power can be reduced between 20% and 40% at iso-performance and performance can be boosted by similar amounts at iso-power. Additionally, energy savings can be translated to substantial advantages in terms of reliability and thermal management. More importantly, the technology can be adopted with minimal modifications to conventional EDA flows.

Modeling of Jitter Characteristics for the Second Order Bang-Bang CDR
Bang-Bang clock and data recovery (BBCDR) circuits are hard nonlinear systems due to the nonlinearity introduced by the binary phase detector (BPD). The specification of the CDR frequency response is determined by jitter tolerance and jitter transfer. In this paper, jitter transfer and jitter tolerance of the second-order BBCDR are characterized by formulating the time domain waveforms. As a re...

In this paper we consider the issue of source clock frequency recovery in packet networks and propose a new adaptive clock method based on the Kalman filter (KF) with low-pass prefiltering—KALP (Kalman filter-based Adaptive clock method with Low-pass Prefiltering) in short. Noting that because of the difficulty in modeling as well as the nonwhite Gaussian nature of the packet jitter most existi...

Almost all logic systems have a main clock signal in order to provide a common timing reference for all of the components in the system. Supporting the highest bandwidth data rates among devices requires advanced clock management technology such as delay-locked loops (DLLs). The DLL circuitry allows for very precise synchronization of external and internal clocks. In this paper a low jitter and...
